Statement & Assumption

What is a Statement & Assumption?

In this reasoning topic, a statement is given, followed by one or more assumptions. You must decide which assumption(s) is/are **implicit** in the statement.

Definition: An assumption is something that the speaker/writer takes for granted as true before stating something.

Key Rules to Solve

  • 🔹 An assumption is implicit only if it is **necessary** to make the statement meaningful.
  • 🔹 Avoid assumptions based on general knowledge or personal opinions.
  • 🔹 Look for **words like “should”, “must”, “ought to”** carefully—they often imply assumptions.
  • 🔹 If the assumption goes beyond or contradicts the statement, it is **not implicit**.
